Essay Presentation Guidelines

The following requirements need to be adhered to:

·         All work must be typed. Handwritten work will not be accepted under any circumstances.

·         All work must be double spaced with an inch margin.  A 12pt font is preferred.

·         All work must be in your own words. All quotations must be appropriately acknowledged and cited.

·         There is a range of bibliographical referencing/citation systems. You are free to use a style of your choice. The only requirement is that you are consistent. Please do not mix referencing styles.

·         All work must be submitted with the appropriate paper work, i.e. Assignment Cover sheet.

·         Your Bibliography should include no less than six references (books, journal articles).

Choose one of the following topics. 

  1. Disability is best understood as a social and legal fiction and not a mere biological reality”. Critically discuss with reference to legal & social policy concerns.

  1. Because of the complexity of disablement there is a persistent need for a workable  characterisation of the targeted population”. Critically discuss with reference to at least two models of disability.

 

  1. “Integration policies are merely a form of assimilation in disguise”.  Discuss in the light of debates about Social Role Valorisation Theory (SRV).

 

  1. “The technological use of artefacts and practices means that today’s ‘normal’ will become tomorrow’s ‘abnormal.” Critically debate this issue in relation to the fluidity of such categories as ‘disabled’ and ‘able-bodied’ and the pursuit of ‘ableism’.

 

  1. “It is often said that the ‘Disability Business’ is really about maintaining the power of experts and the professional view point”. Is this statement true? Critically discuss in relation to the role of Human Service workers and emancipatory models of practice. You should make reference to at least one theoretical perspective of disability that would inform your practice.

 

  1. “Feminist arguments about community care are in direct conflict with calls for deinstitutionalisation as advocated by the disability rights movement”. Provide a critical analysis of the debate.
